Event-Badminton(Women’s Doubles).

Both of them are well aware of what one is good at and what one is not good at.They literally complete each other on court!!

Ashwini Ponnappa :- won her first national title in 2004 in the sub-junior girls doubles category. She also won national title in sub-junior girls doubles in 2005,Junior girls doubles National title in 2006 and 2007. She won the gold medal in mixed doubles and the team events at the South Asian Games held in 2010. She then paired up with Jwala gutta and won many championships together.

Jwala Gutta :- has won  the National Badminton Championships fourteen times till 2013 which makes her the top-level doubles specialist in the country. She has been representing India on the international circuit for more than 15 years. She has partnered with Shruti Kurien earlier in her career winning the nationals with her for six consecutive years. Later on Jwala paired up with Ashwini Ponnappa before New Delhi Commonwealth Games and found greater international success with her as the pair has consistently been ranked among the top-twenty in the BWF World Ranking reaching as high as no. 10 in 2015.

Jwala has brought numerous medals for Indian badminton including the bronze medal BWF World Championships in 2011 and a gold and silver at 2010 and 2014 Commonwealth Games respectively in women’s doubles which were the first for the country in the discipline. She has also won bronze medal at Badminton Asia Championship and appeared at 2009 BWF Super Series Masters Finals alongside Diju which was the first for the country in any discipline. She was ranked No.6 with her partner V. Diju and was the first partnership to be ranked among top-10.She has been listed several times among the top most inspiring sportswomen.

All this wasn’t something like sheer luck and she didn’t turn out to be a star in a night. She has struggled enough to prove . She started playing badminton at the age of six and has won Under-13 Girls Mini National Badminton Championship held at Thrissur,Kerla. She also won the Women’s Doubles Junior National Championship and the Senior National Badminton Championship, both in partnership with Shruti Kurien in 2000. She has been consistently good in doubles and has entered the Semi Final round of her second International Doubles tournament, the India Asia Satellite tournament 2002.

She then split up with her long time partner Shruti Kurien and paired up with young Ashwini Ponnappa and won the sensational gold medal in the women’s doubles at the New Delhi Commonwealth Games. They even brought the women’s doubles into limelight in the country. In 2011 it was one of their best performance ending up with a bronze medal at world badminton championships which was also the first time from Indians. She then took a temporary sabbatical from the game after London Olympics,2012.

She came back in 2013 and partnered with Prajakta Sawant. Jwala was bought for USD 31,000 and captained the Delhi franchise in IBL which was the richest badminton league. In 2014 Jwala and Ashwini won the bronze medal at Asian Championships in April defeating 3rd seeded Thai pair of Kunchal Voravichitchaikul and Duanganong Aroonkesorn in 2014. Jwala and Ashwini Kick started 2015 appearing at India Open Grand Prix Gold held at Lucknow. The pair then went on to win Canada Open Grand Prix and that was their first title since coming back after 2012 Olympics. Jwala and Ashwini have again won a bronze medal at 2016 Thomas & Uber Cup held at Kunshan, China.

What more do you want to say that these two together are the best pair to win a gold medal for India.
Hope this pair gets their name etched in the history books by winning gold medal in Rio Olympics 2016.
