Although boxing has been one of the mainstays of Olympics, it was introduced for Women only in London 2012. Except in Stockholm Olympics 1912 (Sweden has banned boxing) the event has been present in all Olympics since introduced in 1904. US, Cuba and Great Britain have been the big medal contenders in boxing. For India, Vijender Singh and Mary Kom have brought home bronze medals. Both not a part of the Rio contingent.
The main change in event in Rio 2016 is that male athletes no longer have to wear protective headgear in competition, due to a ruling that it contributes to greater concussion risk. Female athletes will continue to wear the headgear, due to “lack of data” on the effectiveness of it on women!!
Jabs, crosses, uppercuts… a single punch can make all the difference in boxing.
